SSI Open Water Scuba Instructor

The SSI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) certification is the gateway to a professional teaching career. As an SSI Instructor you are authorized to train and certify students in all SSI recreational programs, from Try Scuba to Divemaster. The program combines comprehensive knowledge development, teaching technique workshops, and in-water assessment by SSI-certified Training Consultants.

  • Prerequisites: SSI Divemaster certification, Diver Stress & Rescue, React Right First Aid, 100+ logged dives
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Includes: Knowledge Development, Water Sessions, Teaching Internship
  • Outcome: Certify divers across all SSI recreational programs

SSI Divemaster

The SSI Divemaster program is your first step into the professional side of diving. As a Divemaster you are qualified to lead certified divers on guided dives, assist SSI Instructors during courses and water sessions, and supervise snorkeling activities. It is the ideal program for passionate recreational divers who want to turn their love of the ocean into a profession.

  • Prerequisites: Diver Stress & Rescue, React Right First Aid, minimum age 18 years
  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Includes: Leadership Skills, Assisting Courses, Guided Dives
  • Outcome: Lead dives, assist instructors, supervise programs

For SSI Instructors

Add Specialties to Your Portfolio

As a certified SSI Instructor, you can expand your teaching portfolio by adding specialty instructor authorizations. Bucea Baja Norte offers two pathways to earn these authorizations and certify students in new specialty areas.

Specialty Instructor Seminar

SSI Specialty Instructor Seminars are intensive one-day workshops covering the academic and in-water content of a specialty course. Upon completion you earn the teaching authorization for that specialty and can immediately begin certifying students. Most core and open water specialties are available in seminar format.

Co-Teaching Program

The co-teaching pathway allows an SSI Instructor to qualify for a specialty teaching authorization by assisting a certified Specialty Instructor during a live course. Complete the required co-teaches under supervision, demonstrate academic and in-water competency, and earn your authorization upon completion.
